Rules & judging criteria
These rules govern entry, submission, and judging for the 2026 AI for Social Impact Challenge contest.
This page is the source of truth for any prize or eligibility claim made elsewhere on the site. Final terms are confirmed by the program organizers (UNITAR & Ureka).
Eligibility
- Open to participants worldwide, of any academic discipline and background.
- No prior AI or coding experience is required.
- Entrants must enroll in the course ($60 USD, or via a university/organization bulk seat) and complete all 6 modules before submitting.
Submission format
- Entrants submit a project proposal (not an essay) describing an AI-supported solution to a real-world problem aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
- The course guides you through building the proposal, including a short pitch produced with the course tools.
- The submission deadline is 15 October 2026.
Judging criteria
Submissions are evaluated using criteria aligned with the UN SDGs:
- Relevance of the chosen problem to the SDGs
- Feasibility of the proposed AI solution
- Ethical considerations and responsible-AI thinking
- Potential social impact
- Clarity of presentation
Awards
The top 10 performers receive a fully funded trip to the award ceremony, held at UN HQ Geneva on 9–11 December 2026. Recognition also includes a winners' certificate and trophy, a LinkedIn recognition badge, and inclusion in the AI for Social Impact Yearbook. The exact scope of what the funded trip covers (for example, travel and accommodation) is confirmed by the organizers ahead of the ceremony.
Notes
- The certificate is a certificate of completion issued by UNITAR (the UN Institute for Training and Research). It is not a degree or a separate endorsement by the wider United Nations.
- The $60 enrollment fee is non-refundable once you enroll (see our refund policy).
